Private Residence - Brockenhurst

This client approached us to design a lighting scheme for a new kitchen extension and specify a new audio visual system for a family entertainment room.

This project centers around a stunning central island. Our task was to provide functional light with the addition of accent lighting for key focal points. The suspended bulkhead (specially designed by ourselves to house the in-ceiling extractor) mirrors the exact shape and size of the island and
features hi-performance LED lighting tape which up-lights the ceiling, providing more than enough ambient light. Glare free rectangular LED downlighters (reflecting the island linearity) are used to provide the high level of task lighting required. Smaller complementary downlighters are used to accent light furniture throughout. LED tape was also used to light an old fireplace and at low level around the island to give a "floating" effect. The slate feature wall was up-lit with in-ground LED uplighters and the glass cabinets were lit with miniature adjustable LED downlighters. Additional LED AR111 spot lights were used to provide flexible lighting in the dining area. The lights are controlled via numerous circuits and are all fully dimmable, providing the client with maximum flexibility.

The audio visual system is a simple setup, but the key was to keep it as clutter free as possible. The scheme consisted of two new TV locations, with the family room also having an in-ceiling surround sound setup. The client had numerous sources which they wanted connected to both TV's but didn't want all the equipment on show. We designed a scheme whereby all the sources and equipment were stored remotely but could all be viewed and operated at each TV point by a single remote. In addition, to support the new and existing equipment, we specified a new hard-wired network infrastructure complementing this with a new managed WiFi system, utilising both internal and external access points, to cover the whole site.

Private Residence - Lymington

We were asked by our client to design a lighting and A/V system to be installed into their new bespoke oak cabinets.

The brief from the client, was to create a visually interesting display that wasn't over lit and could house a new smart TV and music system. Most importantly though, the client did not want to see the light sources or cabling and they wanted the structure and shelves of the cabinets to be kept as thin as possible.

The solution was to router out specially designed and angled groves into the shelves to house high quality LED tape. Cabling was directed via holes carefully drilled through the center of the shelves and groves routed into the back of the shelves side panels.

An Infra Red repeater was used to send the Infra Red signals to the A/V equipment housed in the cupboard, this meant solid oak doors could be used.

Bespoke Glass Tree Light

The brief on this project was to create a unique lighting feature for a wall some 6M high.

Numerous ideas were discussed with the client and in the end it was thought having a single bespoke light was the solution.

The house is situated within the New Forest and the clients decided that they would like to bring the forest theme into the design. The initial design was devised on a piece of paper by the clients.

Since the house already had a contemporary feel, it was decided that the light should also be contemporary in design and materials. The clients had already seen and admired some work previously, by leading British glass-blower Neil Wilkin. Neil was commissioned by the clients to design and manufacture the tree for them.

With the design and manufacture of the tree in hand, it was up to us to turn the sculpture into a light. Working with Neil, we explored various options including conventional lighting and integrating high power LEDs into the fixture. Because of the size, heat and maintenance issues with these options, they were soon disregarded. The final decision was to incorporate fibre optics into the structure of the tree and continue them out of the bottom of the trunks and under the ground in duct work to a projector hidden away in a nearby cupboard. This would mean that all serviceable parts were separate from the tree and that no heat was produced from within the sculpture which may effect the glass flowers. The flowers are lit by a 150W HIT projector via 375 individual 1mm diameter strands of glass fibre, thread through the hollow stainless steel branches.

The final result was a stunning stainless steel and glass "Tree" which appears to grow out of the floor and up the wall. As the light permeates the petals it casts patterned shadows across the ceiling. The result is a truly unique one off.

www.neilwilkin.com

The house was undergoing a major refurbishment and when complete the property was going to be used as a holiday home. For this reason, the clients wanted it to have a hint of a boutique hotel feel.
